Alpaca walking experiences in Co. Roscommon

Two ways to spend time with Bert, Ernie and Oscar — a guided one-hour walk through field and forest, or a relaxed meet-and-feed in the paddock.

The route

One hour, three stops

The walk takes about an hour at a gentle pace. Here's where you'll go.

  1. A guide and a young child meeting three alpacas on an open green field in Co. Roscommon.
    01

    The field

You'll meet your alpaca on the open field — green grass, big skies, room to breathe. It's the first few quiet minutes that let them get used to you and you to them.

  2. Two children walking with three alpacas through a quiet green woodland.
    02

    Into the forest

From the field we head into the woodland. The light changes, the path softens underfoot, and your alpaca walks calmly by your side. There's usually a moment everyone goes quiet — it's that kind of place.

  3. A family walking back through a pine forest with a cream alpaca, viewed from behind.
    03

    Along the forest edge

We finish along the pine-edge — a relaxed return back to the farm. There's time for last photos, last hellos, and to swap muddy boots for coffee and ice cream.

    Bert

    white

Bert is our steady white alpaca, unbothered by big crowds and small visitors. If you've never met an alpaca before, he's a gentle place to start.

  • Ernie, a chocolate-brown alpaca seen in profile against a meadow and blue sky.

    Ernie

    brown

Ernie's deep chocolate coat and curious eyes make him the photographer's favourite. He likes to take the walk at his own thoughtful pace.

Every visit includes

What's part of a visit

A guided walk with your alpaca
A guide stays with you for the full hour — they know the route, the alpacas, and the small things that make the visit easier.
Meeting and feeding before the walk
Time in the paddock to say hello, hand-feed your alpaca, and let everyone get comfortable before setting off.
Plenty of time for photos
We never rush this bit. Stop whenever you'd like a picture — your guide is happy to take it.
Coffee and ice cream after
A small treat after the walk. A warm cup of coffee, an ice cream for the children, somewhere to sit down.
A collage showing visitors meeting, walking and feeding the alpacas at Alpaca Walks Loughglynn.

Before you arrive

A few small things to know

Nothing scary — just the little habits that make the visit easier for everyone, alpacas included.

  • Walk beside your alpaca, not in front.

Alpacas prefer it that way — they like to see where you're going and to follow your shoulder, not lead from behind.

  • They don't graze during the walk.

We feed our alpacas before and after, so they walk happily without stopping for the grass. You don't need to tug — they know the routine.

  • Keep the lead gentle and loose.

Your guide will show you how on the day. A soft hand is all it takes.

  • Children walk between an adult and the alpaca.

It's the easiest pattern for everyone — the adult holds the lead, the child walks alongside.

  • Sturdy shoes recommended.

The field and forest can be soft after rain. Wellies in winter, walking shoes the rest of the year.

Allergens and dietary needs

We serve coffee and ice cream after each visit. If anyone in your group has a food allergy, intolerance or dietary requirement, please let us know before you arrive so we can prepare accordingly.
